Island Yoga Training Immersion
I had a fantastic week... I loved experiencing the teacher’s different styles/skills. It kept the workshops fresh and interesting… I feel the workshops have broadened my understanding of what yoga is a part of, and you have introduced me to ways of developing my practice on and off the mat.
Apart from all classes, the “yoga life” was also incredible…
It was all a wonderful experience and I will never forget it.

WOW Retreat 2016

October 17 - November 6, 2016

We are excited to present The Yoga Training Immersion, a new program at Island Yoga to offer yet another option for profound inner development and learning. The intention of this 21 day journey is to engage the body, mind and spirit so we can easily flow in the direction of our true passions and purpose. With this in optimal integration, we may experience a life of connection, evolution, service and joy.

Our program skillfully and creatively supports a deepening of your personal practice with two yoga classes a day plus an additional workshop-module that explores other topics within the realm of yoga, health and well-being for a full and insightful yogic lifestyle.

Experience an empowering 21 days as you explore a fusion of ancient practices of yoga and meditation applied to modern living, participation in Seva/ Karma Yoga project, and how to incorporate this in your daily life with heart and integrity. Our Immersion is both intensive and flexible so you can enjoy the activities and serenity offered in the unique and magical retreat setting of Island Yoga on Koh Yao Noi.

You will leave with a greater understanding of ‘the yoga tree and its’ many branches’, having been immersed in the foundations of alignment in asana, meditation, pranayama, yoga philosophy, and a transformative experience of personal exploration. You will experience the heartfelt healing power of service with a community Seva (Karma Yoga Service) project on the island, and celebrate devotion to life and creation with Bhakti Yoga (Mantra & Chanting) and expressive movement. Inquiry-work, journaling, group sharing circles, ritual and ceremony will also be a part of our shared experience.

With all of these components together, the Immersion is more than just that: it is a spiritual, full-spectrum journey that will open doors within you for greater awareness and self-discovery. With this insight, you can then open doors outside of you to grow even more.

You will sweat, stretch, and transform while making true connections with other yoga practitioners from all over the world. You will work hard, but at the same time, truly nurture your body, mind and spirit while developing your individual gifts and enhancing your practice.

**What is different about this program than what is offered at Island Yoga already? What are some of the advantages to this program in comparison to the 3, 5 or 7 day rolling retreats offered? How is it unique?**

-- You are with the same group of people over the 21 days studying (and playing!) rather than having the daily group change, as the rolling retreats do. This can create closer relationships and safe space for comfortable inner exploration. It also enables us to build upon themes to carry throughout the program because it is the same group. All new material each day and each week.

-- You are also (primarily) with the same two teachers, Andrea and Heather, which also allows for a more intimate connection: we get to know all the parts of YOU.

-- Longer class sessions, and the inclusion of additional workshop-modules during mid-day and a few evening meetings each week.

-- Participation in a community Seva-Karma Yoga Service project on the island. Get outside the yoga shala and into the experiences of life with the Thai people and environment of Koh Yao Noi!

-- The program is both retreat in nature AND an opportunity for intensive study and commitment.

Some of the Topics Covered in the Workshop-Modules and/or Evening Sessions:

o Energetic Anatomy and Healing Touch
o Yoga Mudras -- Yoga for your Hands
o Mindfulness Meditations
o Demystifying the Chakras & Chakra Balancing Techniques
o Hindu Mythology & Storytelling
o Mantras & Chanting -- Sound Healing
o Restorative Yoga -- Benefits for the Nervous System
o The Power of Manifestation & Positive Psychology
o Seva project on the Island
o Therapeutic Yoga & Self-Care Techniques

o Yoga to Manage Your Mood -- Emotional & Mental Balance
o Yantra Yoga: Learn Your Personal Chakra Reading!
o Inquiry-work on the Shadow Effect, Interviewing the Inner Critic, Leadership and Communication Skills

Your Teachers:

Andrea Franchini

Andrea is a lifelong student, loves travel, and learning about how other cultures historically connect to the divine. She is devoted to her spiritual practice and personal development.

Andrea is based in Asheville NC, where she has been living for 6 years. She began teaching yoga in Washington DC in 2003 and received her 200 hour yoga teaching certification in Vinyasa yoga. Still new to yoga, Andrea focused her free time studying different styles and techniques of yoga to feed her curiosity. Teaching came very naturally for Andrea, who came to yoga from an extensive dance and movement background. For five years, Andrea taught public classes throughout the Washington D.C area in studio’s, community centers and private sessions. Sharing yoga became a way to inspire people to empower their lives, to re-empower a lost connection to their physical, mental and emotional health and harmony.

In 2007 Andrea moved to Northern California, and continued to study and teach in the San Francisco, Bay Area at premiere studios such at the San Francisco Bay Club, Kula Yoga, Yoga Sangha and World Yoga, while still maintaining a private practice. Andrea would travel to Southern California to retreat at Manzanita Village, a Zen center with tradition in the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh, meditation and Buddhist practices for social activism and leadership. The experience at M.V. inspired a life of service and compassion. When in the Bay Area, she began to study Cranial Sacral Therapy, Reiki and other subtle movement and energy practices. She found that integrating energy work empowered sight and sensitivity both as a practitioner and teacher.

Andrea’s style is inspired by both physical alignment and a deeper mind-body-spirit awareness and attention. She flows from the heart and stays open to the wonder of the moment while honoring the wisdom the the body and integrity of alignment. Andrea has continuously throughout her career shared meditation, yoga and expressive movement with youth at community centers, schools, in partnership with Non Profit organisations, with volunteer and seva programs both in United States and abroad in South America and the Caribbean.

She is currently spending her time sharing the practice of yoga, leaning music and enjoying family, while working towards her vision of pursuing a Master's Degree in International Studies in 2017.

Jai Ma,

Heather Rideout

Heather's yoga path began in 1999 when she set off for her first big backpacking journey to Nepal. The moment she landed and arrived in Kathmandu, smelling the intoxicating incense from morning puja, she knew something inside of her had come home. Her wanderlust seed, already firmly planted, was further nourished as she traveled deeply within on a journey of self-discovery through yoga. She hasn't looked back since and offers to you over sixteen years of extensive trainings, study, practice, creativity, intuition and love that shine through in her teachings. An outdoor enthusiast and global traveler by nature, her adventures with yoga have taken her through North, Central and South Americas, Europe and the United Kingdom, Southeast Asia, Africa, India and of course, Nepal. She shares inspiration from all of these magical places, places that constantly teach her how to most live yoga by being immersed in the energy of the current moment.

Heather has completed over 600 hours of teacher training with the Asheville Yoga Center in North Carolina and has completed several modules with Shiva Rea. She draws much insight from the teachers at Ananda Ashram in New York, founded by Shri Brahmananda Sarasvati, and Mount Madonna Center in California, established by Baba Hari Das. Heather further draws her practice from many different styles and traditions, and often these seeds are planted while roaming the world. She is continuously learning while on the road: meditation techniques from monks in Laos, insight into the Bhagavad Gita from a guru in Rishikesh, the significance of daily offerings in Bali, that "Inshallah" (God Willing) is the best attitude to take into the waves while surfing in Morocco, and that Monday is Shiva Night in Colomb, India where she would join the locals under a holy tree and chant praise. Heather believes this is where the most meaningful pearls of wisdom come to her, when she is open to receiving from everyone and everything around her, in the flow. All of these lessons have impacted her practice and she takes joy in weaving them into her teachings.

Heather is is committed to guiding others on the path of exploring full-spectrum yoga in ways that liberate them to move, breathe and live more from the heart. Her style is a mix of creative intelligence and a down-to-earth nature that invokes a soulful, breath-inspired journey down the river of flow. As a yoga guide, Heather is known for making yoga accessible for all with her grounded nature blended with a spirit of graceful strength.
You can expect to experience a good dose of her classes based in Creative Flow and those in Yin Yoga and Restorative. You will delve into asana, movement meditation, pranayama, mantra, and chakra balancing. Her background is rich with Hindu Mythology, Yoga Philosophy and Bhakti Yoga, and these elements highly enrich her offerings. You will be treated to a lot of storytelling and singing, two of her great loves!

Heather also shares her interest on other themes she gives workshops on; such as Partner Yoga, Facial Yoga, Yantra Yoga and Mindful Manifestation. At the core though, Heather wants to remind you of being playful, curious, introspective, grateful, authentic and balanced…so you can take care of yourself in this sometimes wild and crazy ride called Life. And with that in check, go out and be a true example for others!

When you don't find Heather singing in the yoga shala, you might find her out rock climbing, hula-hooping on the beach, hiking, swimming in the sea or cycling around the treasure that Koh Yao Noi is. She has had the blessing of being connected with Island Yoga and Koh Yao Noi since 2012 and has worn many hats here as yoga teacher, manager, host, taxi service, tour guide, spider-tamer, coconut chopper and instigator of fun with the Thai children on site. She has a deep love for what Island Yoga has grown to become and for the space it holds for you to really come to know YOU.

In total then, you will be staying with Island Yoga & the Nature Lodge for 22 nights. If you should wish to come earlier to have more time to acclimate or leave later, this can be arranged additionally with Island Yoga.

There are lodging options to suit every budget; here are the descriptions and some photos from Island Yoga’s link: Reading these will help you make your choice.

A note here on the terms below: ‘Single Occupancy’ means it is a bungalow or room to yourself, therefore it’s a higher cost. There are some cases where the bungalow or the room has two beds, allowing for it to be possible to share. This is what it means when listing, for example ‘Budget bed’. We will try to do our best to honor your accommodation choice, but the dorms and budgets often fill don’t hesitate too long to book! We will also try to pair people up for sharing in other bungalows, but we can’t promise this. Of course if you wish to book with a friend, you will be together.

Another thought to consider: If you opt to stay in a dorm, there is a chance you’ll be bunking with other retreat guests staying at Island Yoga & the Nature Lodge who are not in your Yoga Training Immersion. The dorms only have three or four beds in them, so not crowded, but others may be on a different ‘life’ schedule than you. Sure, we will do our best to pair up Yoga Training Immersion participants in the same dorm, but it’s not a guarantee. If you feel you need a lot of personal space, the dorm option may not be for you.

Budget bed: $475 USD
Budget single occupancy: $ 750 USD
Comfort bed: $550 USD
Comfort single occupancy: $895 USD

Program Overview'S

These are some commonly asked questions. If you can’t find your answer below or have any additional queries, please do not hesitate to contact us for more information at You can also contact Island Yoga at

There is a wealth of information on the Island Yoga website to peruse, and some of your questions may be answered there, especially under the ‘Planning Your Visit’ link.

What is included in the cost of the program?
Your tuition investment of $1,500 USD includes the full time spent with your instructors during the program: daily classes and workshop-modules. Accommodation is NOT included in this amount, but you will see there is a wide range of cost-friendly accommodation choices we offer through our host, Island Yoga and the Nature Lodge. The accommodation rate DOES include breakfast, but all other meals are NOT included. Please see the link for ‘Tuition and Accommodation Fees’ for more information on this. Drinking water is provided. Transportation such as airfare, boats, buses or taxis (however you’d like to get to us!) are NOT included in the cost of training.

What about other meals?
You can choose to take lunch or dinner at the Nature Lodge restaurant, which has a focus on delicious Thai food. There are also other nearby restaurants within walking distance, or you can rent a bicycle or motorbike to get around more. Eating on the island is affordable; expect to pay anywhere from $2-8 USD for a dish, depending on what you get. There are also shops you can pick up snacks and fruit to keep with you.

What should I expect at Island Yoga & the Nature Lodge, and on Koh Yao Noi island?
Ah, a little slice of paradise! Island Yoga & Ulmar’s Nature Lodge work hand-in-hand as the beautiful venue space for your training. It was created initially as a space to offer affordable yoga retreats, but also aims to give you more of a connection to the Thai family who takes care of the accommodations and restaurant than perhaps you would experience at a big, fancy resort. This sweet and lovely base for your stay is located in Tha Khao village; it is a quiet beachfront resort run by Ning and her ever smiling crew of family and friends who put their heart and soul into making your stay special. Besides your bungalow choice and spending a lot of time in the yoga sala, there is a swimming pool, hammocks on the beach and the common space of the restaurant/lounge to spend time.
The island of Koh Yao Noi is a gem, surrounded by karst limestone cliffs that jut out of the sea. Nature abounds with mangroves, rubber trees and jungle. Compared to other Thai islands, it is not overly developed and the local people are kind and warm, always happy to help. It is a safe space to be able to immerse in your studies, and to also relax fully.

What if I miss a session? Are there any days off?
Attendance is up to you. Of course you will get the most out of the program if you attend all of it, but if you choose to miss a class or workshop, this is your choice. There are no full days off, but there will be one day of each week without a workshop-module so you have more free time to join an excursion offered by Island Yoga or do your own thing.

Is this program appropriate for those newer to yoga? What about for more advanced practitioners?

Absolutely! A training-immersion such as ours is more like a journey, learning more about yourself through the process. We will offer variations for all levels in the yoga classes, and the format of the workshop-modules is often discussion in nature. This program will be insightful to those who are curious about a diverse range of topics within the sphere of yoga and well-being, and will also offer new material to those who have an established (but ever expanding!) practice already. I believe we are all beginners: everyday we come to our mats, or simply open our eyes, we have the chance to begin again. It is a matter of approaching all teaching and learning with humility and gratitude; that is really the gauge of what determines how advanced we are, not whether we can put a foot behind our head!

What is the Cancellation Policy?
In the event of cancellation, the following policies apply:
90 days or more prior to the training: You will receive a full refund of your deposit, minus a service charge/processing fee.
90-30 days prior to the training: Half refund of either your deposit or payment will be issued, minus the service charge/processing fee.
30 days or less: Payments are non-refundable.
Refunds are not available once the program has started.

*Also please note that we have the right to cancel the training at any time if we do not meet the required attendance. If this should happen, you will receive a full refund OR the option to put the money toward another retreat or program at Island Yoga within the next year. Namaste*
